Abstract
Childbirth is a physiological process that begins with uterine contractions, which trigger cervical dilation and the descent of the fetus. If labor lasts longer than expected, it is referred to as prolonged labor. Progress of labor is an important indicator for assessing whether the labor process is normal. This progress is marked by cervical dilation, descent of the fetal presenting part, and increasingly intense uterine contractions. One factor that influences the progress of labor is passenger, which includes the fetus, placenta, and amniotic sac. A large fetal weight can hinder the labor progression due to imbalance between the size of fetus and the mother’s pelvis. Estimated fetal weight can be determined from the height of uterine fundus and then calculated using the Johnson-Tausack formula. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between estimated fetal weight and the progress of labor in the active phase of the first stage. This study employed a quantitative method with an observational, cross-sectional design. The independent variable was estimated fetal weight and the dependent variable was the progress of labor, the sample consisted of 41 parturients selected using purposive sampling. The data collected were primary data obtained from partogram sheets and data collection, which were then analyzed using the Fisher Exact test. The study results indicate that nearly all parturients had estimated fetal weight in the normal range (95.1%) and progress of labor in the normal range (87.8%). The results of Fisher Exact test indicate that estimated fetal weight is not significantly associated with the progress of labor in the active phase of the first stage (p-value 0.232). It can be concluded that estimated fetal weight is not significantly associated with the progress of labor, indicating that estimated fetal weight is not a primary factor that directly determines the progress of labor.
